E-Waste Calculator: How Much E-Waste is Sitting in Your Home?

Old phones, unused tablets, forgotten smartwatches and game consoles gathering dust?

Use our free e-waste calculator to find out how much e-waste is hiding in your home – and see how trading in with 4gadgets can keep tech in use and out of landfill.

Why E-Waste Matters

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Every smartphone, tablet or games console contains valuable materials, but also hazardous substances that can leak into soil and water if they end up in landfill. On top of that, manufacturing new tech comes with a significant carbon footprint, long before a device is ever switched on.

And this isn’t a distant problem. It’s happening at home.

Most UK households are sitting on two to three unused gadgets, tucked away in drawers, cupboards and boxes – no longer used, but not recycled or traded in either.

The Scale of the Problem

62,000,000

62 million tonnes of e-waste each year

1,600,000

1.6 million tonnes of e-waste in the UK each year

23.9 kg

The UK ranks among the highest e-waste producers estimated at around 23.9 kg per person

25,000,000

25 million mobile phones are disposed of in the UK each year

Our own survey found that UK households are collectively holding on to millions of unused devices that could be reused, refurbished or responsibly recycled instead of going to waste.

That’s why we built this e-waste calculator: to help you see how much e-waste is already sitting in your home – and what simple actions can make a real difference.

How the Calculator Works

The results from this calculator are estimates, designed to give you a picture of the e-waste sitting in your home – not an exact scientific measurement.

To build it, we used research-based averages drawn from a range of reputable environmental sources, including:

  • Peer-reviewed e-waste research studies
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) from manufacturers
  • Industry lifecycle assessments (LCAs)
  • Data from organisations such as the UN’s Global E-Waste Monitor and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

These sources help establish typical environmental impacts across different types of consumer technology.

What We Measure

For each type of device, the calculator uses average values for:

  • Weight: the typical physical weight of the device
  • CO2 impact per year: the device’s total estimated lifetime carbon footprint, divided by its average lifespan. This includes:
    • Manufacturing emissions
    • Transportation
    • Electricity used during its lifetime
    • End-of-life disposal or recycling
  • Toxic materials: an estimate of hazardous substances commonly found in electronics, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and flame retardants, that can pose risks if devices end up in landfill
  • Average lifespan: how long devices are typically kept before being replaced, based on consumer behaviour studies

Important to Know

Every device is different. The actual impact of your tech can vary depending on:

  • The specific model and manufacturer
  • How intensively it’s used
  • Your local electricity mix
  • The recycling or reuse options available where you live

That’s why this e-waste calculator focuses on reasonable averages to help you understand the scale of the issue and make more informed decisions about what to do with unused tech.

Why It Matters for Your Household

Unused tech doesn’t just take up space; it has real consequences. Understanding what’s sitting in your home is the first step to doing something smarter with it.

Better for the Environment

Electronics contain hazardous materials that can cause long-term harm if they end up in landfill. Reusing, refurbishing or recycling devices responsibly helps keep toxic substances out of the environment.

Better for the Climate

Most of a device’s carbon footprint comes from making it, not using it. Keeping tech in circulation reduces the need to manufacture new devices, cutting emissions before they happen.

Better for Your Wallet

That old phone or games console still has value. Trading in unused tech can put money back in your pocket, while choosing refurbished devices costs less than buying new.

Don’t Be a TOOL: Keep Tech Out of Our Landfill

Now that you’ve seen how much e-waste is sitting in your home, the next step is simple: put that unused tech to better use.

Based on your results, there are a few ways you can make an immediate impact:

  • Trade in with 4gadgets
Turn unused phones, tablets, smartwatches and game consoles into cash – and help keep perfectly usable tech in circulation.
  • Recycle responsibly
For devices with no resale value, proper recycling ensures hazardous materials are handled safely. Use UK-approved WEEE recycling schemes to avoid sending tech to landfill.
  • Shop refurbished
Choosing refurbished tech cuts demand for new manufacturing, saves money and delivers the same functionality without the unnecessary footprint.

Turn unused devices into cash, savings and a smaller environmental footprint – starting today.
