Manufacturing a single smartphone produces an estimated 70-90 kg of CO₂, most coming from mining and processing raw materials. Extending a device’s lifespan delays that carbon cost and reduces demand for new resources.

  1. Overcharging: holding a device at 100% for long periods keeps the battery at a high voltage, accelerating wear.
  2. Deep discharges: running down to 0% can cause voltage levels to drop so low that the battery struggles to recharge properly. 

Lithium-ion batteries are happiest when kept between about 20% and 80% charge. At very high or low states of charge, the chemical reactions inside the cell put extra stress on the electrodes, which speeds up degradation.

Habits That Help Extend Battery Life

  • Avoid overnight charging: leaving your device plugged in all night often means hours at 100%, which is stressful for the battery. Many modern devices include ‘optimised charging’ features – enable them to limit charge at night.
  • Use manufacturer-approved chargers: cheap or knock-off chargers may deliver unstable current, causing excess heat and potential damage.
  • Use slow charging: slow charging generates less heat and is gentler on the battery, ideal for routine top-ups.
  • Limited fast charging: fast charging is convenient but should be saved for times when you truly need it.
  • Keep devices cool: high temperatures are battery killers. Avoid leaving gadgets in hot cars, direct sunlight or next to heat sources.
  • Remove cases during heavy use: some cases trap heat, so take them off when your device is working hard, e.g. heavy charging or gaming.
  • Store properly for infrequent use: if you won’t be using a device for weeks or months, charge to 40-60% before storing to avoid degradation. Store in a cool, dry environment (ideally below 25°C) and avoid damp basements or hot attics.

For smartphones

Enable adaptive charging features (e.g. iOS Optimised Battery Charging, Android Adaptive Charging). Lower screen brightness and limit background apps.

For laptops

If used mostly on mains power, enable battery preservation modes offered by many manufacturers. Keep vents clear for cooling.

1. Cases and Screen Protectors

A well-designed case can prevent catastrophic drops and screen cracks without adding bulk. Look for cases with raised edges to protect the screen and camera. Tempered glass offers strong impact resistance, while film protectors prevent scratches with minimal thickness.

Some heavy rubberised cases can trap heat, which can shorten battery life and affect performance. If your device tends to run warm, especially during charging or gaming, opt for a breathable or vented design.

2. Avoid Physical Strain
